Hamburg Klezmer Duo

A Masterful Dialogue of Tradition and Innovation

Founded in 2024, the Hamburg Klezmer Duo is the culmination of a twenty-year creative partnership between two of Hamburg’s most distinguished klezmer virtuosos: Mark Kovnatskiy (violin) and Stas Dinerman (accordion). Dedicated to the professional mastery of Yiddish musical traditions, they have shared the stage since 2004 and co-founded the renowned Hamburg Klezmer Band in 2007. This duo represents a refined, intimate exploration of Eastern European heritage, where technical brilliance meets deep cultural immersion.

Deeply Rooted: The Heritage of the Cradle

Both musicians share a profound personal connection to the music they perform. Originating from the former Soviet Union - a region historically celebrated as the cradle of Klezmer and Eastern European Jewish traditions - Kovnatskiy and Dinerman carry the authentic spirit of this heritage in their artistic DNA. Their performances are more than technical mastery; they are a living bridge to the source, blending ancestral echoes with their own virtuosic evolution.

The Program: From Archives to Original Works

The duo’s repertoire is a vivid tapestry of Klezmer, Moldavian, Romanian, and Ukrainian traditions. Their performances transcend mere preservation; they breathe new life into centuries-old melodies and showcase original compositions that reflect the musicians' diverse influences. It is a journey where every note is backed by decades of expertise and a shared musical intuition.

Synergy of Styles: Authenticity Meets Arrangement

The essence of the Hamburg Klezmer Duo lies in the synergy of two distinct creative forces. Mark Kovnatskiy brings his unparalleled expertise in traditional repertoire, historical stylistics, and the authentic Yiddish soul. In contrast, Stas Dinerman crafts the majority of the duo’s arrangements, weaving in his profound knowledge of modern, popular, and jazz music. Together, they create a unique, sophisticated sonic experience where every traditional melody is reimagined through a contemporary lens.

The Virtuosos:

  • Mark Kovnatskiy (Violin): A world-renowned interpreter and a leading figure in the global Yiddish music scene. Known for his "classic-meets-traditional" sound, Mark is a soloist with international orchestras, a prolific composer of new Yiddish music, and a top-tier expert in Yiddish dance.

  • Stas Dinerman (Accordion): A versatile master and sought-after arranger who seamlessly bridges the worlds of Jewish music and contemporary styles. His expertise in jazz, funk, and rock brings a modern edge to the duo, further enriched by his experience performing with major ensembles like the Augsburger Philharmoniker.
